RedWaves Lite: Speed Optimization

RedWaves Lite is a blazing fast theme, but you can make it even faster!

Here are two simple steps to speed up your RedWaves Lite theme:

Step1. Load jQuery from Google’s CDN servers:

By default, the theme loads jQuery (if you don’t already know, jQuery is a Javascript library used to create cool effects and animations like fade-effect,  slide-effect, show/hide content… etc.) locally. Fortunately you can load jQuery from Google’s CDN servers for free!

  1. Go to Appearance >> Editor and open the functions.php file. (alternatively you can open the functions.php using your FTP account)
  2. Scroll down to

    /*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/
    /* Enqueue scripts and styles.
    /*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/

    and change this:

    // Loading jQuery
    wp_enqueue_script( 'jquery' );

    to:

    wp_deregister_script( 'jquery' );
    wp_register_script( 'jquery', ( '//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.7.2/jquery.min.js' ), false, null, true );
    wp_enqueue_script( 'jquery' );

that’s it! now jQuery will be loaded from Google’s CDN servers instead of wp-content.

Step2. Load FontAwesome from MaxCDN servers:

Second step is to load the FontAwesome files from MaxCDN servers instead of loading them locally:

  1. Go to Appearance >> Editor and open the functions.php file. (alternatively you can open the functions.php using your FTP account)
  2. Scroll down to

    /*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/
    /* Enqueue scripts and styles.
    /*-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------*/

    and change this:

    // Loading FontAwesome
    wp_enqueue_style( 'font-awesome', get_template_directory_uri() . '/inc/FontAwesome/css/font-awesome.min.css', null, '4.3.0' );

    to:

    wp_enqueue_style( 'font-awesome', '//maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com/font-awesome/4.3.0/css/font-awesome.min.css', null, '4.3.0' );

Now go to GTmetrix, Pingdom Tools or Google’s PageSpeed Insights and test your website speed. The new results will amaze you!
